Boulders Beach Penguin Colony

  Boulders Beach

Although the idea of relaxing on a beautiful South African beach and being surrounded by native penguins sounds somewhat strange that’s exactly what you’ll get at Boulders Beach on the Cape Peninsula!

This South African beauty spot is hugely popular with fascinated tourists who come to visit the penguins in this unique habitat.

The national park site just outside of Simmons town is home to around 3000 penguins and tourists can freely explore the area, spend the day on the beach and even swim among these famous ‘Jackass’ penguins.

Named for their Eeyore-like cries the penguins first came to Boulders Beach in 1982 and ever since they have lived untroubled by locals and tourists.

This is an ideal place to visit with children as they will love seeing these magnificent creatures and their playful antics. The penguins are very relaxed; just standing around on the soft beaches, hiding behind the rocks or playing with their young. The penguins don’t seem to mind the tourist interest in them and happily live on the beach and surrounding coves, regularly fishing in the surrounding warm waters.

The beach itself is an idyllic spot with calm warm waters and protected by large granite boulders, making it great for swimming and relaxing. Less than an hour away from Cape Town and its luxurious hotels, Boulders Beach is a perfect day out for families that want to entertain the children and enjoy the local beach and sunshine!

In Cape Town, stay at the deluxe Table Bay Hotel or the impressive Cape Royale Hotel on the waterfront for fantastic accomodation in the Mother City of Africa.
