Viva volcano!

Mount Pelée, Martinique

With all this talk of volcanoes very much in the news over the past few weeks, it got us wondering where else in the world you can visit and view an awe-inspiring volcano while on your travels.

These natural wonders can be found all around the world – some markedly safer to visit than others – but all make for a fascinating day trip. Some of the best sights in the world for volcano hunters, and the best places to stay with Destinology to see them include:

  • The active volcano of Kilauea, which is on the Hawaiian isle of Oahu. Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and get a real flavour for this magnificent sight. Stay at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina, which is a private retreat with stunning views out across the ocean, and serves as a perfect base for volcano exploring.

  • Mount Vesuvius, one of the most well-known volcanoes in the world, which famously erupted many thousands of years, enveloping the Italian city of Pompeii completely with molten ash and rock in its wake. Visitors to Rome can make the short trip here with ease. Boscolo Exedra is one of Rome’s premier hotels, and offers and elegant and peaceful escape from the buzz of the city beyond.

  • White Island is one of New Zealand’s most volcanic landscapes. With an array of geothermal pools and spas, Rotorua is the perfect base from which to explore this spectacular island. Visitors can walk right into the main crater here, and see plumes of steam which continue to emit from the depths beneath you. Peppers on the Point is a delightful, luxurious lodge mansion with extensive grounds to explore and enjoy.

  • Mount Pelée in Martinique in the Caribbean is an imposing figure towering over this beautiful Caribbean island. A powerful eruption rocked the island early in the 20th century, but in the many years since then it has become a draw for tourists, many of whom go hiking on its lush green slopes, or simply soak up the sunshine from the beaches below. Le Cap Est Lagoon Resort & Spa is a relaxing and exotic sanctuary to soak up the Caribbean sunshine and hospitality.

  • Bora Bora in the South Pacific is characterised by the remains of an extinct, twin peaked volcano, much of which is beneath sea level, and enjoys stunning scenic views at every turn, with a sheltered lagoon occupying the old crater and a beautiful reef offering the ultimate escape. The St Regis Regis Bora Bora Resort is a breathtaking retreat, with exquisite private over water villas making for a tranquil and chic haven.
