Boutique hotels...chic hotels?

The term ‘boutique hotel’ is often used in the travel industry – but what does it really mean?

You could be excused for thinking that a ‘boutique hotel’ is one that might feature a boutique, with a hairdresser or spa at the property. However, this is not always the case.

Another definition might have you believe that you could expect to find a fashionable clothes or trinkets shop on the premises, again – this wouldn’t necessarily be accurate.

Another description refers to boutique as a ‘small specialised producer or business’ and we think this definition is best be-fitting to cover the broader reference to the ‘boutique hotels’ featured by Destinology.

As a by product of this, our boutique hotels tend to be independently owned and managed and not part of a larger chain, although this is perhaps a slightly grey area, as many luxury hotel groups have successfully managed to transcend the boundaries and create boutique environments across their hotel portfolios.

Browsing through the Destinology website, you’ll come across a range of charming boutique hotels where attention to detail and personalised service are paramount. If visiting Cape Town, we have a dedicated section for Cape Town Boutique Hotels, or to gain inspiration elsewhere, follow one of our suggested links below:
